Question by Mei: Cystic Fibrosis question: in 1950s (and before) life expentcancy was only about 1 year,?
whereas today it is currently 38.4, and rapidly extending. So life expectency is 38 times more in about 50 years.

In which years was the biggest jump in life expentancy and what medical development was primarly the cause of this jump?

What i mean is, was there some treatment that was invented that all of sudden made L.E. for CF 10 times what it was, and when did this happen?

The No 1 answer:

Answer by pollypocket8282
I think medically Pulmozyme was the start of the L.E. jumps. cff has a timeline if you want to see what was established when…
I know when pulmozyme first came out I went from doing IV antibiotics 2-3 times a year to going 2 years Healthy without ANY Antibiotics.

A question asked by edgygirl: Genetics question for Biology?
imagine that you are a genetic counselor, and a couple planning to start a family comes to you for information. Charles was married once before, and he and his first wife had a child with cystic fibrosis. The brother of his current wife, Elaine, died of cystic fibrosis. What is the probability that Charles and Elaine will have a child with cystic fibrosis. Neither Charles or Elaine has cystic fibrosis.
I know the answer is 1/6 but how do you get that?

really stuck and that is as much i know about the question :s

The top answer:

A Medical Question on Cystic Fibrosis?

Question posed by MKM: A medical question on Cystic Fibrosis?
My niece who is 25 and recently found out she is 7 weeks pregnant has just been diagnosed as a carrier of cystic fibrosis, she has never had any symptoms of the disease my ?’s are,
How will this affect her child or could it, and how can a person be a carrier without any symptoms? Also there is now history at least on the mothers side.

No 1 answer:

Answer by Doxycycline
Cystic fibrosis is what is called an “autosomal recessive” disease. This means that for your niece’s daughter to have CF, Dad would also have to be a carrier for CF OR have CF himself.
If Dad is neither a carrier nor a victim of CF, there is a possibility for the child to be a carrier of CF but this will not harm the child and it will not be an issue until it comes time for the child to have kids of his/her own.

Genetics Question Please Help!!?

A question from sherry: Genetics Question please help!!?
1 in 1700 US Caucasian newborns have cystic fibrosis. ā€œCā€ for normal is dominant over ā€œcā€ for cystic fibrosis. What is the frequency percentage of the cystic fibrosis allele?
a. 97.6%b. 0.059%c. 2.4%d. 0.01%

Top answer:

Answer by Asst Prof
(c).

If the frequency of cystic fibrosis, cc, is 1/1700 or 0.00059, then the frequency of the c allele is sqrt (0.00059) = 0.0243 or about 2.4%

Question About Cystic Fibrosis?

Question posed by Paige Morgan: Question about Cystic Fibrosis?
My friend has Cystic fibrosis, but I think it’s not so severe.
He was born in 1995, and I think there were lots of problems when he was young and he had some surgeries. He lives in Israel. He goes to the hospital every month for some kind of test and last year he started a kind of experiment (?) where they put something tight on his neck area for about a day, take pictures and stuff. If it’s the right treatment it will help him.
I know he takes lots of medicine and Enzymes before he eats. He’s the right size for his age.. and he runs a lot, he’s in a very good shape. His record is I think about 13.5 KM, and he ran 10K in 49 minutes. (Just to show you that he runs a lot and is very fit)
What can you tell me to make me understand more? And what would you say his life expectancy would be?

Top answer:

Answer by BAMABANDS
Well they say 16 to 18 but my sisters best friend is 40 and had it very bad. Het SIS died at 16 from it. It’s a genetic disorder that effects the respitory system. They thought my son had it but he has bad asthma. U can Google info on it. We would have to beat that girl in the back every morning just to get the junk out. of her chest. Good luck.

Biology- Genetics Question!?

A question asked by rdy_rp23: Biology- Genetics Question!?
Cystic fibrosis is an autosomally inherited genetic disease. The disease phenotype is recessive to the normal phenotype.

a. If two normal individuals who are carriers (heterozygous for the disease allele but phenotypically normal) have a child, what is the probability that the child will have cystic fibrosis?

b. If two normal phenotype parents (genotype unknown) have one child with cystic fibrosis, what are the chances that their second child will have cystic fibrosis?

Top answer:

Answer by burnforg0d
a. 25%
b. still 25%
i think this is right because if both the parents are carriers for it then it should be 25%. It doesn’t change the probability of the second child having cystic fibrosis though.
