A question from Itri: If two people are carriers for cystic fibrosis, what is the probability that they will have a child with cy?
If two people are carriers for cystic fibrosis, what is the probability that they will have a child with cystic fibrosis?

This is a genetic question that requires a Punett square. Cystic fibrosis is a recessive trait, meaning you need 2 alleles for cystic fibrosis to display it phenotypically. So if you define “a” as the allele for cystic fibrosis, “A” is the normal allele. A carrier of cystic fibrosis will have the genotype: Aa. If you do a Punett square, you’ll discover that there’s a 1/4 chance the child will have the aa genotype and will have cystic fibrosis.

Do People Survive Cystic Fibrosis?

Question by Seth: Do people survive cystic fibrosis?
Is there any treatment for it? Also are people born with it or can they get it later in life?

The No 1 answer:

Answer by jordan
There is treatment but no cure! You are born with it! It is 100% genetic..the mom and the dad must be carriers..and even then its a 1 in 4 chance of your child having it! People with CF do not live a full life..my little sister has CF…and even though shes sick..shes still a normal little girl that is amazing!

Sorry that the post was very general. Obviously I have the disease. I am asking if anyone who has this disease has experienced any of these symptoms on top of the everyday symptoms that occur. Yes, I have the availibilty to seek professional advice from my doctor just wondering if anyone who also has cf has had anything like this? Thanks, Hope this is more specific for the two people who posted below.

milelj79 asked:

My daughter will be two weeks old tomorrow. We got a call from the pediatrician today that her newborn screening tests came back and she needs to go having further screening to test for cystic fibrosis. Did anyone have to do this and have the tests come back negative that they don’t have it? Neither me or my husband have a family history of CF, so this was a surprise. I’m very worried and hoping it’s a false alarm.

Does anyone have a child with CF? What symptoms did they have as a newborn?

I did read about CF online, but am curious about what other people have experienced with their babies.

Thanks for any information you have.
