A question asked by Jilly: Can cystic fibrosis cause a miscarriage?
I am a carrier for Cystic Fibrosis. I’m not sure if my boyfriend is (he’s getting a blood test done) but I just had a miscarriage and my doctor said that MAY be the reason why. I’ve had a miscarriage before too, I’m just wondering if this could have caused it? =[

A question from Les: Can Cystic Fibrosis be a cause of Agent Orange? Help!?
Is cystic fibrosis a cause of agent orange? help!?
I found out I am pregnant a few weeks ago, and decided to undergo a test for cystic fibrosis. I found out I am positive for having one bad gene from my mother or father. I am wondering if it somehow could be related to my dad being exposed to agent orange? Now my child might have a chance of getting cystic fibrosis if my hubby has one bad gean as well. Please help me I am having a hard time finding any information on the internet about agent orange and cystic fibrosis

No. Cystic Fibrosis existed long before the invention of Agent Orange. It is a very specific gene, which is why they now have a test for it. It may seem new to your Dad. During Vietnam era, children with CF rarely lived long enough to attend elementary school. However, CF was always there.

CF is a genetic illness linked to a gene defect that is common in white people. The gene in question in the CFTR gene, and the defect is that it disrupts the production of a protein that makes a chloride channel on the surface of cells. This interferes with mucus and water secretion, and in the lungs, that means there’s a problem secreting enough water to keep the airway mucus smooth and slick. In people with CF, the lung mucus is very thick and sticky, which makes it hard for them to breathe, and it traps germs making them prone to infection.
Guessing from your avatar, you are white. That would put you at greater risk of having CF than, well … me (not that I don’t have my own crazy genetic defects). Even if your husband wasn’t white, you might as well have him checked for the CF gene defect.
btw, CF is NOT linked to Agent Orange (though Agent Orange did a lot of other bad things to the human body).

My boyfriend has two children from his previous marriage with cf. From my understanding they have to inherit a specific chromosome from each parent in order to have the terminal hereditary disease. Tons of info can be found on cff.org

A question from small_darris: What is the genetic cause of Cystic Fibrosis?
The No 1 answer:
Answer by M.L.J
Every year, 1,000 children with cystic fibrosis (CF) are born in the United States. One in 3,000 Caucasian babies have the disorder, making CF one of the most common lethal genetic diseases in Caucasians. Overall, there are 30,000 Americans with CF, and an estimated 8 million people carry one copy of the defective gene that causes the disease. These carriers do not have symptoms of CF, because a person must inherit two defective gene copies-one from each parent-to develop the disease. However, each child of two CF carriers has a one in four chance of being born with CF. Genetic testing is now available to identify couples at risk for having children with CF.
Improved therapy has transformed CF from a disease characterized by death in early childhood to a chronic illness, with most patients living to adulthood.

A question from Lulu: Can radiation cause diseases like cystic fibrosis?
I read that cystic fibrosis is caused by a mutation of the CFTR gene, so even though the condition is inherited is it possible that the environment plays a role in developing CF? For example, would the presence of mutagens such as UV radiation affect the frequency of CFTR mutations in a population? You can probably tell I’m not really a biologist, so please explain as though you were explaining to a child
Most detailed answer:
Answer by Ann!
It is unlikely, yet possible for UV radiation to cause genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis. Here’s how it works: in order to have a recessive genetic disease like cystic fibrosis, you need 2 bad copies of the gene (one from mom, one from dad). In order to be passed on, mutations must be present in germ cells (sperm and eggs). These cells are generally protected from most environmental mutagens like UV light, but deeper penetrating radiation, or chemical carcinogens could cause mutation in the germ cells. Even if that did happen, most mutations do not result in disease – in fact, the protein that those genes code usually doesn’t even change. Environmental mutagens are more likely to cause disease in the people directly exposed to them than their children.

A question asked by Mummy of 1 expecting #2: Can smoking during pregnancy cause cystic fibrosis?
My 15 month old nephew has had serious trouble breathing since the day he was born, been in and out of hospital. My sister in law has just been told by doctors they’re pretty sure it may be cystic fibrosis. It wont be for a month or so before before they can clarify it, but I am doing some research just in case as I don’t really know anything about the disease. My sister in law smoked cigarettes all though her pregnancy ( yes it is completely wrong! ) and I was just wondering if this can be a cause? If not, what can cause it?
Selected answer:
Answer by Mary
no- CF is a genetic disorder in which both parents are carriers of the gene.
