Physiotherapy, nutrition, medication, and excercise.
Cystic fibrosis (also known as CF) is a common hereditary disease which affects the entire body, causing progressive disability and often early death. The name cystic fibrosis refers to the characteristic scarring (fibrosis) and cyst formation within the pancreas. Difficulty breathing is the most serious symptom and results from frequent lung infections that are treated, though not cured, by antibiotics and other medications. A multitude of other symptoms, including sinus infections, poor growth, diarrhea, and infertility result from the effects of CF on other parts of the body.
treatment: antibiotics to treat lung disease.
CF is a relatively common genetic disease where the chloride pump is defective. This leads to thick sticky sputum and repeated chest infections, problems with nutrition and premature death.
The treatment has improved over time and people are living much longer with intensive physiotherapy, better use of antibiotics, drugs that help to break down the thick sputum. Gene therapy shows promise. The single missing gene in spliced into a harmless virus that the patient breathes in.
