My boyfriend has two children from his previous marriage with cf. From my understanding they have to inherit a specific chromosome from each parent in order to have the terminal hereditary disease. Tons of info can be found on cff.org

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder. A child must inherit a specific gene from both parents to get cystic fibrosis.

It’s from a genetic mutation on chromosome 7 which controls the amount of chloride ions that go in and out of your cells. The mutation doesn’t allow for the chloride to pass through the membranes, thus not allowing for proteins and sweat to be processed properly.
