   Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder marked by large amounts of very thick mucus. It is this thick mucus and the patients inability to clear it that is the main complication associated with this disorder.
   It is more prominant in Caucasians occuring once in every two thousand births. Ther are approximately 2,000 babies born every year with CF, and approximately 30,000 americans living with the disorder.
   CF is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder. This means that it is present at the moment of conception, it is not carried on the sex genes so a man or woman can carry the gene, and if the CF gene is paired with a normanl gene , then the CF gene will be recessive(withdrawn)allowing the normal gene to gain dominance and the person will not have CF.
   For most people a diagnosis of CF is made within the first 3 years and is done so by a sweat test. Dr. Paul di Sant-Agnese developed this test in 1953 after realizing that the sweat from a CF patient had 2-6 times more salt than that of a healthy individual.
   The most common symptoms of CF include frequent pneumonia, wheezing, salty skin, excessive appetite with no accompanying weight gain, and persistent cough.
   The most serious aspect of CF is respiratory problems. Eventually everyone with this disorder will develop lung disease. Because the mucus is so thick, the patient is unable to keep their airway cleared. The warm moist environment of the lungs makes the lungs a prime breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.
   Common therapies include chest physical therapy, exercise, aerosols, and antibiotics. The flutter device has been shown most effective, clearing three times more mucus than chest percussion.
   If a suitable donor is found, a lung, heart, or lung & heart transplant can be performed but only in severe cases.
   Researchers are working on a cure known as Gene Therapy. In this process, healthy genes manufactured in a laboratory, are introduced into the airways of CF patients. These researchers believe that it is not unrealistic to think, that over time, Gene Therapy will involve adding enough normal genes to override the effects of the CF genes, thus creating a cure for this disorder.

   Was told the side effect of collidal silver was agria a bluing of the skin .as for my self I have a life for now above the hospital bed I really do not care if I break out in spots with the image of a monkeys rump on my face. To be able to breath better and get out and live a little is worth any color I might turn.
