My Son had a positive sweat test for cystic fibrosis. My son now has to have another sweat test done to confirm the results. What are the chances that it is a false positive? What if the test results are inconclusive?

The initial sweat chloride test does have a 15% false-positive rate on initial testing. It really depends on the actual value obtained. The higher the value (especially over 60) the lower the odds that it was a false positive. If the second test is either intermediate or high then they will probably send confirmatory genetic testing for the most common genetic abnormalities associated with CF (delta F508 mutation, etc).
The CF foundation has excellent online resources and is very helpful
Good luck to you and your son
my son was diagnosed with cf. he is now 3 very fun loving child. there is a web site that is called 65 roses. it will take you to the cystic fibrosis organization page. there are so many wonderful people out there that will support you and help you through rough times. and it can be very uplifting and give you hope after hearing their stories, some of the cf doctors can be pretty negative when there is no need to be. i hope the test comes back negative, but if it doesn’t i wish you the best of luck and remember God is here for you
