My best friend has cystic fibrosis. He is currently 18 years old and he is very healthy. He eats like a machine and he is about 5 foot 8. He is a very fast runner he plays soccer daily and also run track. Even with this amount of exercise and nutrition is his life expectancy still only around 40 years?

you can only get this answer from a doctor.
but the median age is around 35.
Life expectancy varies and there are people in their 70′s with CF. The oldest known person diagnosed late is an 82 year old male.
There is a man in named Hal Soloff from Norwich, CT who will be 79 years old April 9, 2009. Hal was an attorney with a New York Stock Exchange firm when he was diagnosed at age 28 years old with cystic fibrosis. He also became a teacher teaching at a private secondary school for twenty five years, and as an adjunct faculty member on the undergraduate and graduate levels at two colleges. Retiring in 1990:
You can read another article about him at:
With new research it is improving each year.We have family members in their 50′s with CF and we are not seeing any life ending situations from CF in their lives. It sounds like your friend is doing very well. Do not look on line for old CF information, most of it is out of date scary information. Look into an on line site called Cystic-L:
Life with CF is a lot about management and good choices. Keep being a good friend by caring and allowing him to be who he is – without CF being a focus – but admire him for his tackling life and doing all he does in spite of CF.
We have a attitude which we find humorous – CF is like a dysfunctional family member and we deal with it as we must and enjoy everything else around it. You know the saying you can pick your friends but not your relatives well we think you can pick your attitude but not your genetic makeup. You can make it a good life or not the choice is yours.
About half of current Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patient live past 31 yrs old with a life expectancy of 36 yrs. This is remarkable because in the first half of the 20th century the life expectancy for CF patient was about 2-3 yrs. I remember in the 80′s that the life expectancy for CF patients were about 14 yrs and in the early 90′s it was 20 yrs.
Nutrition, exercise, and CF treatments he could extend his life expectancy by a few years to a few decades. It is now very difficult to predict how long any individual can live with CF.
The longest living CF patient in the US was Katherine L. Shore who was 79 yrs old when she died of CF in 2004.
They have been making extremely good progress in find a treatmeant or a cure for CF.
The oldest I heard about was 37 y.o. But the trend is upward and in a few years they might be able to help more. We’ll just have to wait and see.
God bless.
