There is a genetic test that can be performed. A blood sample is taken, and lab technicians run procedures to determine whether a defective CF gene is present.

The test is generally offered to prospective parents, especially if they have a family history. If you or your partner are trying to get pregnant, you can ask your OB/GYN for the test.
