You’ll end up getting sicker then you are. Don’t be stupid.
Smoking anything, regardless of having CF is not healthy in any way, shape, or form.
As for the doctor, I don’t think a lung test will show that you smoked a joint. But a *** test will, if tested for. And know this, pot use, even slight, can be detected in your sample as long as ninety days.
If you want to get high, try exercising, listen to some relaxing music, go on vacation and visit a place you’ve always wanted to go.
Your joking Brian … right? Dont play dumb .. you know the answer … I have never met a CF patient that wasnt well educated in their disease process …
Right … only one time … famous last words ….
Brian do yourself a favor and find something more productive to experience for the first time … there is nothing positive that can come from this .. Marijuana inhalation is harsh … are you ready for respiratory distress?
Make the right decision and man up….
You only live once so enjoy it while your here.
As a fifty one year old with CF I suggest you do your own thinking and research by not asking people if their experience has been good or bad because their experience will be that of only one person or God forbid “well I knew a guy, which really means wait a minute while I make up crap to support my position” Before someone says people don’t get to fifty one with CF, we do. I have the F508 gene and a mutation that is too long to remember but my salt test was a 63 which is a definite positive.
Well meaning people can give honest but incorrect advice trying to help. There are alternatives to smoking marijuana. A device called a vaporizer heats the marijuana enough to release the good chemicals without getting it hot enough to burn which GREATLY reduces the irritation. Are you worried about lung distress, of course you are but the question is will using a vaporizer allow you to dislodge mucus plugs from your lung so you have more lung area to breath from. If you enter a websearch of Cystic Fibrosis and marijuana and look only at scientifically based articles you will find there is significant evidence that SOME people do benefit from using marijuana with a vaporizor (or at least a water pipe with ice in the water).
I encourage you to do your research and understand that I like other people are just trying to help you make the decision that is right for you. I do searches using the phrase “marijuana and cystic fibrosis”. You might try it and it may or may not benefit you. As far as addiction, before I became disabled (am waiting on a transplant and no smoking anything then) I earned three degrees in Psychology and Counseling and was a licensed counselor for many years. Many of my clients had addiction issues and of ALL drugs including nicotine and alcohol, marijuana has the MILDEST withdrawal of any drug. Yes it is eventually physically addictive but withdrawal is generally described as feeling like you have the flu and are irritable. Pretty much what you are already experiencing from the CF anyway. You can use SOME marijuana without turning into Tommy Chong.
How it works for me and yes before anyone asks, I tried Marinol and it did not work inside the lung. It was like when a kid gets gum put in his hair by the school bully and he can’t just pull it out because it sticks to him like the snot in our lungs. He can NOT EAT enough peanut butter to cause his hair to get oily enough with peanut oil to make the gum release from his hair. But if he applied the peanut butter DIRECTLY to the gum, within a few minutes the gum’s ability to stick will deteriorate and the gum will break loose from his hair. That is the difference between taking Marinol for mucus release and appling vaporized marijuana DIRECTLY to the interior of the lung. I will dislodge one to three major plugs and just get a slight buzz. I don’t like getting really high because I am old enough to know something might come up where I need to think clearly and I can do this using just a little marijuana. Good luck and God Bless all the people that have expressed concern for you regardless of their view because they are speaking from their experience or what they have been told. I have some advantage as a trained (retired now) professional specializing in addiction and regretfully the disadvantage of having CF. One more thing there is NO OTHER ILLEGAL DRUG that benefits people with CF so don’t lose your focus. When I get my lung transplant or some medication that does the same thing I will immediately stop. But if it means violating a law (being careful to do it as LEGALLY as I can) I will do what I have to in order to stay alive.
Believe it or not Cops are human too and while they will still arrest your butt for having pot, if you show them respect and as much respect for the laws as you can whiloe still fighting for your life, the Judge and/or DA may have compassion for you and tell you “go and sin no more” (or at least do so discreetly).
If you decide you want to use it and if you don’t live in a state where it is legal, don’t deal with criminals any more than you have to. I would encourage you to investigate “marijuana seed banks” in Amsterdam via the internet or “High Times Magazine” so that you can grow just enough for YOU to use for you health purposes. Do NOT keep a scale (like a jeweller uses) multiple sandwich bags or anything that might make it look like you are dealing drugs. If you sale it you will go to jail and we CFers don’t do well in jail. So make sure that it is VERY CLEAR this is for your medicinal use and if you can get you doctor to write you a prescription for Marinol, that will take care of any drug tests looking for THC (Chemical in marijuana)I would also NEVER pet the Police Drug Dog no matter how cute he is. He might alarm on you and that would give the police reasonable cause to search you and your stuff.
Good Luck,
Charles Hicks Ed.S.
I’m 19, and I have the F108 gene for CF as well. I’ve been smoking for about 4 years now, anywhere from once-a-month to 5 times a week. I refuse to smoke anything but water pipes and vaporizers, and my pfts have remained above 90. The morning after smoking I am able to cough up a lot of mucus, and I feel great. The marijuana also helps me to settle my nerves and slight depression, and helps me find a common interest with a lot of cool people and other serious musicians like myself. When I get the chance, I make marijuana edibles which are great because I get the feeling of being high without doing any damage to my lungs. I do encourage you to try it once, but not a joint. You NEED filtration as a CF patient. You cannot afford to have that many carcinogens and plant fibers flying into your lungs. Happy smoking.
Electronic cigarette smokers like the mental image of smoking. The motivation may be inspired close to the savour of the nicotine or the sawbones act of having an.
