Could My Baby Have Cystic Fibrosis?
Question by Mrs. Kelly: Could my baby have cystic fibrosis?
2 of the many symptoms for cystic fibrosis are COUGHING A LOT and SALTY TASTING SWEAT. Well, my 9 month old has had a cackle that sounds like a mild cough off and on since she was about 4 months old. The doctor just thinks it’s a quirk of hers. Her sweat is not salty per se, but smells and tastes VERY VERY bitter, like metal. ??? I just started noticing the latter, so I am calling the doctor in the morning. Do you think there is a chance she could have cystic fibrosis? All else is normal (no other symptoms).

It doesn’t sound like it. All sweat is salty tasting – the symptom you are referring to is salty-tasting skin. If her skin tastes salty all of the time, in other words. Is her cough like a wheezing? My 8 month old coughs quite a bit just because he is vocalizing a lot (he also had colic up until 6 months old so screaming fits made his throat sore).
I understand the worries a new parent has (I’m one myself) but think you are worrying unnecessarily. Still, to ease your mind, definitely check with a doctor to rule it out, and then you won’t be so worried all the time. Always check with a doctor on these things.
But from what I see, she is probably fine.
She can only have it if both your husband and yourself carry the gene for it. Ask the doctor to test you when you take her in to be checked.
You are doing the right thing by calling your doctor in the morning. Make an appointment and ask for the test. I noticed salty skin on our baby when he was six months old and yes he has cystic fibrosis. They can do a simple painless “sweat test” on her which takes about two hours at the longest.
You can check out this site: http://www.cff.org/AboutCF/Testing/SweatTest/
Symptoms vary so she can have among several symptoms a cough, low weight gain, salty skin or just one or two symptoms. It is also possible it’s not CF at all.
FYI: I have heard that some vitamins can cause a metal taste so it seems best to follow through on your decision to see the doctor.
Best of luck to you.
Just insist that your doctor orders a chloride test for your child. It is easy and painless and then you will know. If it is yes, find a hospital with CF specialist and a CF clinic that is recognized by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Do Not settle for less. Try not to lose yourself, get involved and be proactive. Many doctors misdiagnosed our son but my persistent wife felt it and found a doctor who did the test. He is 23 now and most of the time lives life to the fullest. There is hope but it is a heart felt journey. You can visit our family web site for more if you like. http://web.mac.com/edriczaruba1
