Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis! Help!?
A question asked by beachcutie03: Carrier for cystic fibrosis! Help!?
I’m almost 6 weeks pregnant and I had my routine blood work done last week and my Dr. called me today. She told me I’m a carrier for cystic fibrosis. My husband is going to get tested tomorrow. What does this mean if we both carry the gene? Also does this mean I have cystic fibrosis?? I’m worried that I have it now and my unborn baby too! Help!

If you both carry the genes the baby could be born with CF. But both have to be a carrier!
ETA ~ No you dont have CF your just the carrier of the gene!

If you both carry the gene there is a really high risk that the baby will be born with cystic fibrosis. If he is found to be a carrier then there will be more testing and you will talk to a genetic councler who can talk you through things.
If you and your husband carry the gene for CF, there is a one in four chance the baby will have CF. No, you do not have CF. You are only a carrier. If your husband is not a carrier, the baby will not have CF, but could be a carrier like you. For more information, go to the website cff.org. Good luck with the test results.
Hi one in 25 people are carriers if your partner comes back as also being a carrier you will be offered fetal testing. The unborn baby will stand a one in four chance of having cystic fibrosis. You can either have a CVS test or the ammniocentisis. My eldest daughter who is now nearly 11 has CF and we were both unaware of it. I opped to have the CVS done and knew by 10 weeks that my 3rd daughter was a carrier which does not effect her. The test does carry a chance of miscarriage but it is worth doing. Try not to stress the chance of 2 people meeting and both carrying the gene and having a baby with CF is one in 600. CF carriers do not suffer from symptoms but do not suffer from the illness/disease itself
