A man and women want to have children. But they disagree because the woman refuses to get tested to see if she is a carrier of cystic fibrosis. The husband gets tested and finds out he is a carrier. His younger brother suffered from cystic fibrosis and doesn’t want to go through the same thing with his own child. The woman believes that not knowing the risks is better and once they have their baby nothing else will matter. Would you get tested why or why not? Please give more than one reason. a) Since there is a (1/4) chance of a child getting cystic fibrosis, there is a (1 – (1/4)) = (3/4) chance of a child not getting it. If three in a row are not to get it the probability is:

(3/4)^3 = (27/64) < -------------------- Answer to (a)

b) This is the opposite of none getting it (see (a) above) and that is (1 - (27/64)) = (37/64)

i just got off the phone with my doctor and found i am a carrier for cystic fibrosis! my mom and me are shocked. as far was we knew no one in our family has it! i was told a few years ago that i may never be able to have kids or carry them because of my family history. my mother had a horrible time getting and staying pregnant and my brother was very sick when he was born. the nurse told me i would need my boyfriend tested before we try to have kids ( we plan to start soon or we did) i’m scared out of my mind. i got on the national website for more info but it only kinda helped. is there some one who can help me? should i even try for kids? i also haven’t told my boyfriend yet. i’m leaving now to go see him and plan to tell him when i get to his house. any info would be so helpful thank you
thank you all for the advice. i talked to my boyfriend today and he understands the risk but we still plan to have kids though after more testing is done on both of us. i’m still very scared i’ll never have kids but at the same time hopeful and happy i have such a loving man by my side again thanks everyone!!

I really good friend of mine is pregnant and just found out she has cystic Fibrosis. So they brught her husband in and tested him. He is not a carrier so they told her the baby should be fine!
So have your hubby tested! And talk to your doctor!

A question asked by babie_racer_in: Could my medical problems be related to my carring of Cystic Fibrosis?
I have respiratory problems asthma, pneumonia(1 time), Bronchitis (4 times) and Chronic sinusitis even after sinus surgery. I also have arthritis and joint problems. I know I am a carrier for Cystic Fibrosis but I didn’t think that carriers are supposed to have any symptoms but I am only 25 and most people my age haven’t had this many respiratory problems with out other causes. Any one know anything about this?

All the reading I’ve done on cystic fibrosis says it is a genetic disease. However, I have a lot of the symptoms of it and was wondering if it could become evident later in life? Thanks.

Every case of cystic fibrosis is different. you are born with the disease, but sometimes symptoms do not present until later in life. if you really feel like you have a lot of the symptoms, then I would ask your doctor. its always a possibility.

it means you carry the gene… something to consider if you ever want children, because carrying the gene means they can express the disease if their father also carries the gene. No, it doesn’t mean that you will definitely express the disease.

My son has been wheezing, coughing and difficult breathing. they told us it was asthma but none of the treatments work i heard of this other disorder but dont know about it. could he have this???? he is 6 years old

I’m pretty sure you have to be born with CF. If that is what’s wrong with your son I’m sure they would have diagnosed him soon after he was born.

If your son has any of these symptons I would recommend having him checked out by a specialist just in case…. just to be on the safe side

Okay so we found out I was a Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis and my daughter most likely will be a carrier too.

What does that mean exactly. I mean I know we don’t have CF. But does being a carrier cause any respiratory issues….(I know I have asthma and bad sinus problems)

Her father is not a carrier.

Also will they test her at birth to see if she is a carrier or not.

This is something she will want to know before she decides to have children one day.

We found out about this early on in the pregnancy but when the doc said that she wouldn’t have CF and there was nothing to worry about, we didn’t think anymore of it.

But she is due soon and I just wondered if being a Carrier for it will have any ill effects on her and if its had ill effects on me and I just didn’t know it.

It means that as long as you have children with a non-carrier your children will not have CF. If your daughter has children with non-carriers her children will not have CF, but if she has children with a carrier each child will have a 1 in 4 chance of having CF, half of her children will also be carriers and one in four a chance of not having the gene at all.

It’s only a problem when you have two genes for CF, and there are several types, but without the two genes you’re golden.
