I Need Help With Genetics?

Question posed by Irfan M: I need help with Genetics?
A dad is color blind and is a carrier of cystic fibrosis. The mom is neither color-blind, nor a carrier of cystic fibrosis.

What percent of children will have cystic fibrosis and color-blindness?
What is the sex of each child?

Also, mom has type A blood, and dad has type B blood.

What would be the genotype and phenotypes of the children according to the blood of their parents?

Answer by Housewife
If the mum isn’t a carrier of CF, then the child can not have CF, but might have the gene passed down from the father and be a carrier.
There is no way to determine the sex!

And I don’t know the rest sorry.

Is Cystic Fibrosis a Cause of Agent Orange? Help!?

A question from Les: is cystic fibrosis a cause of agent orange? help!?
I found out I am pregnant a few weeks ago, and decided to undergo a test for cystic fibrosis. I found out I am positive for having one bad cell from my mother or father. I am wondering if it somehow could be related to my dad being exposed to agent orange? Now my child might have a chance of getting cystic fibrosis if my hubby has one bad gean as well. Please help me I am having a hard time finding any information on the internet about this.

CF is a genetic illness linked to a gene defect that is common in white people. The gene in question in the CFTR gene, and the defect is that it disrupts the production of a protein that makes a chloride channel on the surface of cells. This interferes with mucus and water secretion, and in the lungs, that means there’s a problem secreting enough water to keep the airway mucus smooth and slick. In people with CF, the lung mucus is very thick and sticky, which makes it hard for them to breathe, and it traps germs making them prone to infection.

Guessing from your avatar, you are white. That would put you at greater risk of having CF than, well … me (not that I don’t have my own crazy genetic defects). Even if your husband wasn’t white, you might as well have him checked for the CF gene defect.

btw, CF is NOT linked to Agent Orange (though Agent Orange did a lot of other bad things to the human body).

What is cystic fibrosis? What type of membrane dysfunction results in the condition known as cystic fibrosis? What types of new treatments are being worked on?

Can someone please give me some websites to answer these questions? I need at least 3 of them for a report. All i’m asking is for some sources! Thanks so much!

www.cff.org – This is the official site for the cystic fibrosis foundation. It is a wealth of great information

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cystic-fibrosis/DS00287 – A simple overview of the condition

http://65redroses.livejournal.com/ – This is a blog written by a young woman who recently lost her battle with CF. Very inspirational.

Help on Human Genetics?

Question by nana ♥: Help on human genetics?
A husband and wife are heterozygous for cystic fibrosis. Their son has cystic fibrosis. Their second chlid, a daughter, doesn’t. Prepare a pedigree for this family?

Most detailed answer:

Answer by scottsdalehigh64
The son is homozygous for the cystic fibrosis gene. The daughter is either heterozygous (only one gene from one parent) or is homozygous for the non-cystic fibrosis allele.

Question posed by Pree Kay: Questions regarding Cystic Fibrosis. See details.?
-What specific part of the cell/structure allows the mucus secretions to be thick and viscous rather than fluid (i.e., is it a membrane channel, organelle or something else)? Please be specific and describe the step-by-step mechanism whereby this altered structure/part of the cell causes the secretions to contain less water.
-Why does Alvin have salt crystals forming on his skin? Explain the mechanism for this.
-What is the accepted treatment for children with cystic fibrosis? Make sure to list at least three and explain why they work (i.e., what is the purpose of each individual treatment).
-List and explain the mechanism of at least two experimental treatments that are currently being tried to help patients with cystic fibrosis.
-Briefly describe how gene therapy may help cure a genetically inherited disease like cystic fibrosis.

If you can’t answer all the questions (only some) that’s better than nothing.
