Chemistry Questions – What Is a Catalyst? Why Are Enzymes Considered Catalysts?
Give a good explanation to the following:
1. What is a catalyst? Why are enzymes considered catalysts?
2. Diagram (and label) an enzyme-substrate complex.
3. Explain, in layman’s terms, the mechanism of action (how does it work?)
4. Approximately how many enzymes are at work in the human body? Why are enzymes vital to the life of organisms?
5. What is the general term for conditions that arise as a result of a lack of enzymes in the body? (Think about it)
6. What caused the condition that affected the blue people of Kentucky?
7. What causes Tay Sachs disease?
8. What causes cystic fibrosis?
9. Jello packages warn that using fresh fruit such a pineapple or papaya will prevent jello from solidifying? However, cooking pineapple (or other fresh fruit) then adding it to the Jello will not affect its ability to gel. Explain this.
10. Some individuals have adverse reactions to consuming products like nutrasweet? What is the relationship between this and the enzyme phenylalanase?
My Daughter Has Cystic Fibrosis, Should I Let Her Go on a Trip Overseas?
My teenage daughter has Cystic Fibrosis. She plays the piano and violin very well and got into an orchestra for young people and the group is going to travel for a couple weeks overseas, to Europe (we live in America). My daughter gets sick a lot and we’ve had some scares with her in the past. I’m afraid she’s going to get an infection or not be on top of everything she has to do on a daily basis (the medications and treatments). I’m protective and although I’d like her to do this and I know how much she wants to go, but I’m afraid something will happen to her. Should I let her go and how can I make sure nothing will happen to her? Should I take time off work to go with her even though she would like to go on her own with the group?
Should a Person With Cystic Fibrosis ?
I’m doing a project of CF and I had a few questions that I would like to answer in my paper.
1. Should a person with CF be on a special diet?
2. What are the treatments that you need?
3. Is it curable?
4.What does a person with this disease look like?
Any more information that is sophisticated would be nice!!! Thanks
Black Mold – a Stay Away Sign
If in the market for a home, there are some aspects you need to steer clear of. One of the biggest warning signs of a home that would be good to stay away from is black mold. There are many reasons why this mold is toxic and not safe to be around.
As everyone is well aware, mold is around us daily. They are floating around inside from open windows, doors and more. The only time this mold becomes a problem is when it comes in contact with water or something that is moist. When speaking of a home, this relates to flooding, plumbing problems or leaking windows and doors.
Mold affects people that are at risk more than those who are not. People that would be considered at risk are the following:
- Chemotherapy patients
- Tuberculosis, a pre-existing condition
- Cystic Fibrosis, a pre-existing condition
- People with asthma
- Infants
- Elders
These people are more susceptible to mold problems due to the weakened immune system. Conditions can be worsened for these individuals through respiratory problems.
Mold is a very illusive type of problem. The persistence of mold is very strong. There are many types of mold and mold formation is very similar. For this reason, mold had to actually be taken to a lab and examined by a professional. When someone makes an assumption of what type of mold it is based off what it looks like, they will probably be around 45% chance of wrong.
The best possible thing to do if you are currently in a home with mold is to remove it. You may have to find out what type of mold it is before you remove it because certain molds can only be removed by certain things.
If the mold area is small, you can usually get it cleaned with bleach. Make sure to only use bleach and no other chemicals, as the other chemicals could react badly and cause bad fumes to breathe in. Light wiping should get the mold off effectively.
For areas that are larger in mold coverage, call a professional. Not only is it a lot to clean, it might need a special treatment. Usually when mold is that bad, there is a severe underlying cause behind it and the problem needs a solution quick, or the mold will keep coming back.
Never try to scrap away mold while it is dry. This is the worst possible way to try and get rid of mold. The reason is because the dry mold will release mold spores when scraped. These mold spores will then get into the air conditioning areas such as ducts, filters and come out through vents. This can be very harmful to you and your family and spread into wider areas of the house. Before you know it, you will have a home infestation of mold. In general, too much mold can get a home condemned and claimed unlivable.
As you can see, mold is a dangerous foe. If you are looking at homes, make sure you are checking for sign of water damage and mold.
